Scott’s Birthday Hike Up Penang Hill
To celebrate my birthday, Maddie, Jeanie, and I hiked up Penang Hill. At 2450ft, it is the highest point on Penang. Since you basically start at sea level, you get to experience all of it. So, it is less of a hike and more of a stair master.
We got to see all sorts of creepy crawly things on the way.
I also saw the biggest snake I have ever seen in the wild. It was at least 4 inches in diameter and 8 to 10 ft long. Sorry, no picture. The screams of my inner school girl scared it away before I could think to grab for my camera. All of it was worth it as we got great views of the island all the way up the hike.
About a third of the hike was steps, the middle third was dirt trail, and we walked the road for the last third because the locals warned of wild dogs on the last part of the trail. At the top, we had lunch at the Bellveue Hotel. Besides having a great porch to dine on and great views, it was also a favorite vacation spot for Buckminster Fuller (for all of you Buckminster Fuller fans).
There was also very colorful Indian temple at the top.
I was exhausted at the end of it, so we cheated and paid someone to drive us to the bottom. Had a great day!
I took many more pictures than are posted here. If you care to see them, you can go to my smugmug site
