Kek Lok Si Temple

Last Thursday, we toured the Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang. Jeanie and I had visited this temple before, but in the daytime and we didn’t make it to the top.

The temple is the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia and is lit up in celebration of Chinese New Year. It is an amazing site with interesting stuff everywhere you look. The Temple is a series of stair stepping levels.

On the main lower level, there are several prayer rooms and a giant pagoda.

Strung thru out the complex are thousands of prayer lamps. People pay money to hang a lamp in remembrance of a loved one. One of the lamps we inspected had a number on it that was over 44,000. So that gives you some of the scale of the place.

At the highest level is the towering statue of Kuan Yin, Goddess of Mercy. It is 30 meters tall. You can see Jeanie and Sally in the picture below to give you some scale.
